Saving Lake Greenwood
Upstate Forever's Saving Lake Greenwood report is a comprehensive overview of five years of intensive research conducted by the Saluda Reedy Watershed Consortium, a broad-based coalition headed by Upstate Forever that includes universities, state natural resource agencies, private business, and other conservation organizations. The report describes the current condition of Lake Greenwood, identifies the primary threats to the lake's water quality, and provides a comprehensive set of recommendations that, if adopted, would ensure the long term protection of the Lake and surrounding communities. The two primary threats to the long-term health of Lake Greenwood identified in the report are sediment from upstream development and phosphorus for wastewater discharges. The report calls for quick, decisive action by upstream and downstream communities, the Department of Health and Environmental Control, and state legislators in order to improve the long-term health of the lake and prevent another catastrophic algae bloom that would reduce lakeshore property values and contribute to fish kills and lost recreational opportunities.
